Now Trending – Best Links Week of 2.22

Best links of the week including where to spring break as an adult, five times you shouldn’t save money traveling, the pizza styles of the US and the best tank top for your workout.

Fancy seeing… me here. I’m going to sit here and try to think about what to write for thirty minutes when I could really do something more productive so I’m just going to get to it and give you the best links of the past month week.

Travel
I wish spring break as an adult was still a thing… even though I’m going on two trips in March.

Cait from Pretty and Fun went on an amaze trip to Japan and definitely has me scoping tickets to Tokyo.

Traveling is expensive, I know. Here are five times you shouldn’t save money traveling.

Lifestyle
If you follow me on Twitter, I tweeted this out earlier this week, but The Most Annoying Habits on Social Media is so spot on.

I feel like this girl is better at being me than me, apartment-style wise.

Anyone who is close to me knows I’m like, real weird and read my horoscope (Refinery29) weekly and totally buy in to all the Pisces this-and-that BS. Anyway, this article on what your birthstone means is actually interesting.

Running and Fitness
Speed work is something I need to get back at ASAP (but I did do some tempo miles this Thursday which felt nice after months of running slow).

My friend Kristine has literally everything on lock-down, but she also has the best tank for your workout whether it’s running, SoulCycle, yoga or a tough strength training workout like Barry’s.

Food
The amount of time I have spent thinking about bagels in the past six months is absurd. I don’t know what’s wrong with me. Here are some can’t miss bagel shops in NYC.

The amount of sugar in most recipes is really absurd and unnecessary — if you want to cut down the amount of sugar, start with these tips.

I’ve read a few articles about how SF doesn’t have good pizza (but those people have never been to Del Popolo). People get real aggressive on the different/best types of pizza in the US.

Can I have these poached egg breakfast tacos for lunch and dinner too?

Chat with me:
Where would you Spring Break this year? What’s the most annoying thing to you on social media? What’s the best type of pizza?

Now Trending – Best Links Week of 2.1

Best links of the week including the best places to travel in 2016, easy weeknight dinners, workouts to do while you Netflix binge and the Instagram accounts you should unfollow this year.

This is like 20 kinds of late but I miss writing these posts! Can we really believe the last Now Trending was a month ago? And I only wrote six posts in January. Things have been busy around these parts and blogging is the first thing to go in a quest to get enough sleep and keep my sanity.

Also, Super Bowl 50 has been like, ruining my life on the daily. I’m 100% refusing to leave the Marina this weekend. Bike commuting has made me the biggest ball of fear and stress in the world. Thursday there were pedicabs taking up the whole bike lane and people in like, early-2000 Ford Explorers basically almost ready to hit me on my bike. I think I have a grey hair from all of this.

Here are the best links I’ve found… the past month. Whoops.

Travel
How have I only been to four of these best places to travel in 2016 (Montreal, Catalonia, Puerto Rico and Sayulita)? Ojai definitely needs to happen soon.

11 tips for sleeping better on a plane.

Lifestyle
little late, but these are the Instagram, accounts you should unfollow this year.

I want to live in this cozy Portland cabin.

As I mentioned, I’ve not been feeling like myself due to a lot of outside stressors. One of my fave SoulCycle instructors, Molli, talks about what to do when you’re off your A game on her blog.

Running and Fitness
Fitness goals that have nothing to do with losing weight. I’m all about learning – or honing – a new skill.

Fun fact: I only watch VEEP when I’m working out. It’s like a way to make me do at home workouts. That being said, I haven’t watched an episode or done a strength workout at home in weeks (FML). Anyway, here are workouts you can do while Netflix binging.

Surfing casual 80-foot waves. NBD.

Food
A requirement to be my friend: we have to order a bunch of plates when we go out to eat and share everything.

Did you buy 20 different types of non-wheat flour on a quest to make the perfect gluten-free whatever? Yeah, me too. Here’s how to use them up.

An easier way to make a grilled chocolate sandwich.

I don’t know about you but the last thing I want to do when I come home from work is to cook dinner. These simple easy dinner ideas are right up my alley!

BRB, running to Pressed Juicery to buy a Compartes X Pressed Juicery Bar.

Watch
I went to an event at Facebook HQ this week and heard the CMO of Lyft speak. She was great! I’m obsessed with this spot they did with Jerry Rice as a Lyft driver.

Now Trending – Best Links Week of 1.3

Best links of the week including how to build a macro bowl, best running shoes for flat feet, affordable island getaways and the one ingredient to upgrade your food.

It’s been almost a month since I’ve shared my favorite recent reads with you. Oddly enough, besides personal posts (talking about things like lightening up on yourself or achieving goals) these are my favorite posts to write.

I had so many holiday links to share but they kind of aren’t relevant now. I always think I’m going to be productive and write when I’m in Pittsburgh but instead I focus on spending time with friends and family. It was particularly hard to come back west this time (but I missed my friends and SoulCycle and decent Mexican food).

Travel
I’m all about Airbnb but sometimes you just gotta stay in a hotel! These hotels are gorgeous and affordable.

If you live in a part of the country that is bitterly cold, you might want to check out one of these affordable island getaways.

This post basically had me planning a trip to Ojai.

Lifestyle
Isn’t it a bummer when shows are like the best ever and then they totally jump the shark and you never even watch the series finale? (I never gave up on Lost or The OC, but totally stopped watching like 5 of these other shows.)

Sometimes we’re all over-worked and over-scheduled and burnt out and need to say no and take some “me time“. I try to leave one night a week open (at least!) to relax, catch up on freelance/blog stuff, make a healthy dinner… basically anything that isn’t an immediate obligation to be somewhere.

Totally loved the story behind Instagram filter names! I wasn’t crazy to think Reyes was about Point Reyes! Let’s just not name our kids Valencia if we’re reading this post, okay?

26 work habits we all need to break in 2016.

Running and Fitness
SoulCycle is partnering with Target to have pop-up studios in 10 cities: Atlanta, LA, Houston, Chicago, Minneapolis, Dallas, Nashville, Denver and Seattle. Make your account and be sure to ride if they’re in your city!

If you have flat feet, these are the running shoes for you.

Tina Muir is such an inspiration to me — not only because she’s an amazing runner but she keeps it real that elite runners do things like indulge and gain weight.

Food
100% NEED these rainbow bagels in my life.

Were you like me and you binge watched Master of None in like a week? Here are 5 things Aziz and the show get right about food (that taco truck scene has been me numerous times).

Sometimes it takes one ingredient to upgrade your food… why have I never put miso on sweet potatoes?

I’m doing this goofy thing where I cook one new vegetable a month in 2016. I’ve already hit two for this month – turnips and parsnips. Spiralized Parsnips with Roasted Butternut Squash, Kale and Feta was so simple and so delicious.

All about the macro bowls. Hit your 2016 resolutions by making some of these delicious bowls.

Chat with me:
DOES YOUR CITY GET A SOULCYCLE X TARGET POP-UP? (Why doesn’t SF?!) What TV show did you love and never finish? What do you think Aziz and Master of None got right about food?

2016 Goals

A reflection on my 2016 goals and a look back at how I did on my goals for 2015.

2015 was kind of a crash and burn year for me. I can safely say I have never been so happy a year was over. I actually said “Bye, 2005” at midnight accidentally because I was so over 2015.

Emily and I were texting (duh) on Friday and she said she loved New Years because it felt like a clean slate. And honestly, this year, it does feel like a clean slate to me. I’m sticking with three attainable goals for this year: one physical, one personal and one professional. Shit, am I getting it together?

2016 Goals:

  • Run a 3:45 marathon
I said I wanted to BQ this year but my Achilles injury majority set me back, including having to throw in the towel for the LA Marathon. I’m toying with running Pittsburgh again and I’m definitely entering the lottery for Chicago. If I don’t get into Chicago, I’ll run Portland.
  • Travel More
I traveled the least in 2015 as I have in years. In 2014 I was be-bopping around somewhere every other week. Also I hated where I lived so… that’s a thing. Anyway, I already have a trip to Tulum booked and plans for Nashville, Vancouver (again) and maybe a few others (Seattle, Austin (again), Europe of some sort or Morocco, somewhere super secret but insanely cool, and hopefully Cuba with my dad).
  • Work on Something That Ends Up in AdWeek
Well, I guess now’s as good a time as any to mention I accepted a new role on the Social Media team at Old Navy, minus me changing my LinkedIn and Facebook after a couple too many glasses of wine (which in my case, is any number over one glass). So yeah, trying to do epic shit.

Let’s see where I netted out for my goals for 2015. They were way too aggressive, which everyone told me, but you know, 2015 Cassie just couldn’t listen.

  • Run a 1:45 half-marathon: Fail. I didn’t even work hard enough to try. I did take like ~2 minutes off my time throughout the year. If it happens in 2016, cool. If not… well, that’s what 2017 is for.
  • Run a full marathon (Pittsburgh Marathon – 4:06)
  • Get Back to my Happy Weight: Fail. I’m actually further from it. But I’m working on it again. While learning how to love and accept myself. I’m going to say hating myself is keeping me from weighing what I want to weigh. So I’m just going to work on balance this year.
  • Stop Snacking After Dinner: Another fail. But I am getting a little better with not letting myself get ravenous hungry at night, hence why I would snack after dinner. I’m also doing better at saying “Shut up stomach, you can have breakfast in the morning” and going to sleep.
  • Strength Train Four Times Per Week: Remember when I said my goals were too aggressive? I’m working on this one, too. Except like, when I can. And saying at least 15 minutes but ideally 30.
  • Go to Yoga AT LEAST Twice a Week: I went maybe once a week. Whoops. I do have a monthly unlimited pass to the new Baptiste Yoga in SF and I like that walk a lot better than the walk to Yoga Flow and I can also easily ride my bike there. And I like that studio approximately 100 times better. It’s no Amazing Yoga, but it will do.
  • Go to SoulCycle Once a Week: That happened like 5-6 times a week in November/December thanks to my Achilles injury.
  • Juice More Regularly: I did use my juicer more this year. And I also bought Pressed Juicery Greens 4 like it was my job.
  • Post Four Times a Week on AGIT: I think I posted like, ~3 times a week on average.
  • Improve My Photography: Not where I want it to be, but a definite improvement on the past year.
  • Business Plan: This like, is half-started. I realized I would have to move home to make this happen and I’m just not in any hurry to leave SF now.
  • Actually Go Surfing: I went surfing a decent amount of times this year and took a Surfcation to Sayulita, which I would like to make an every year thing (at least the Surfcation part, but maybe the Sayulita part because my surf instructor was hot).
  • Be More On Time For Things: I’m going to say this improved. Having to be on time for shit you pay for (SoulCycle, your therapist) makes you more on time for other things.
  • Stop Procrastinating: Nope. Still procrastinating.
  • Visit One New Country: Counting Mexico.
  • Visit Vancouver: Seawheeze! And already registered and have a house for Seawheeze 2016!
  • Take More Advantage of the West Coast: Going to take a hard fail on this one. I went to Big Sur. That’s it.

Happy Friday, pals. This is my last weekend of the year in the city. It feels weird that as much as I’m looking forward to going back to Pittsburgh and seeing my family and friends, I also feel weird leaving San Francisco for two weeks. What will I do without all my friends here and SoulCycle and my therapist and my physical therapist and good coffee and good avocados and being able to buy wine at Whole Foods? That’s when you know you’re home, friends. And when I return to San Francisco, my cousin Jaimie will be here!

Here are the best links I found this week, between press events and drinking a very good bottle of wine with my friends to celebrate work and life and sleeping terribly.

Travel
Cuba is still high on my travel list… but some of these other up-and-coming travel destinations are earning a spot on my list, too.

11 tips for sleeping on a plane. I mean it’s the most uncomfortable thing ever but I’ve gotten pretty good at the red-eye.

Lifestyle
The science behind the five dumbest things you do when you’re drunk. College Cassie lost a lot of keys, made out with boys who were not quite up to par and definitely texted exes. Oh wait, I still do that. And eat two slices of pizza. Oy vey.

A mash-up of the 50 top songs of the year. The number of times I have listened to all of these songs running and in SoulCycle the past year is insane.

Blogging
Why Instagram captions are the new blogging.

The best food props from the Food52 Shop. I basically want them all.

Running and Fitness
How often should runners really strength train? Twice a week and on the same days as you run, especially a hard run. I’ve been working on my strength since I can’t run. It’s not that I hate it, it’s that I hate making the time for it.

This article penned by someone who used to make fun of SoulCycle… and now they can’t quit. I got on my phone to sign-up at 12:01 p.m. (1 minute after sign-ups opened) on Monday because I was in a meeting… and got wait-listed or on the worst bikes (aka not front row) for every class I wanted. Not real life!

Food
I would be lying if I said I haven’t been craving a bagel for approximately months but I know a West Coast bagel won’t kill that craving. An interesting article though on the rise of the San Francisco Bagel, typically made of sourdough!

This couple Instagrams different types of breakfast from around the world… and I immediately began Googling to see where I could find all of these foods in SF.

This post feels pretty personal — ManRepeller talks about talking about food.

I want this Milk Bread in my life.

Chat with me:
What breakfast food from a different country do you want to try? What up-and-coming travel destination do you want to visit? What do you think about the rise of Instagram as blogging? How can I improve my sleep?

After a solid few weeks of sleeping eight hours a night (that’s what happens when you can’t get up and run in the morning) I’ve totally stopped sleeping again. I don’t know what’s wrong with me. But it’s bordering on midnight as I write this and I’ve watched one too many episodes of Scream Queens (my total guilty pleasure show ) so I should get to bed.

Enjoy the best links I’ve found this week – I need to get my beauty rest incase I see my BF Jake Gyllenhaal out and about in SF filming Zodiac 2.

Travel
Kind of surprised by the most Instagrammed spots in every state. Mostly that Milan Puskar Stadium wasn’t the most Instagrammed spot in West Virginia… and that the zoo was the most Instagrammed spot in Pittsburgh? Say what?

The final frontiers of travel. Is it completely crazy I kind of want to go to South Sudan? (The answer is YES.)

The six people you meet on vacation. Does that mean we all fall into one of these archetypes? I suppose I’m some awful combination of the first three.

Lifestyle
We’re all busy this time of year (and in general, right?) and sometimes our calendars get mad over-whelming. Some tips for organizing your calendar,  including that it’s okay to say no to things you don’t really want to do, schedule a day all for yourself each week (I do that!) and outsource where you can. (Google Express or Instacart anyone?)

I’ve basically not started any holiday shopping (shocker) and for those of you in my boat, here’s a guide to perfect gift baskets.

Saving money is way more important than most of us millennials realize but don’t fall for these money saving myths.

Blogging
I need more food props in my life. Loving this list of essential food props for bloggers by Georgie from In It 4 the Long Run.

Running and Fitness
Basically I take anything elite runner Tina Muir says about running as the gospel. Her Gift Guide for Runners was giving me some ideas of what to ask for myself!

This Amish kid is running marathons faster than me in full Amish regalia in PA of course.

Food
100 years of dinner in the US in three minutes. I feel like they are totally spot on.

I’m back on the overnight oats train… definitely going to make these Snickerdoodle Vegan Overnight Oats from Food Faith Fitness.

Cornbread French Toast. That’s all there is to say.

Have you watched Scream Queens? What meals did you at growing up? What do you think is the most Instagrammed spot in your state? What are you up to this weekend?

I really should go do my PT exercises for my Achilles and… wow, updated November 26th: I’m an utter failure and totally just published this and never really finished writing anything. Whoops.

Travel
Can travel ever be authentic anymore? You see the same photo Instagrammed on everyone’s account of them riding a camel in Dubai, drinking Guinness in Ireland and in a hot spring in Iceland. My key? Go somewhere gritty.

A list of things to do before you leave for Thanksgiving (or vacation or honestly, in general). I actually do all of these (minus leave a meal in the freezer – but gotta start doing that) before I leave.

Lifestyle
Unexpected nail polish combinations, for when you don’t know what color to make your party nail (am I the only person who still consistently rocks the party nail?).

It’s not news stress is bad… but are we overlooking that some stress is normal? And why are millennials so anxious? (Answer: Helicopter parents and as much as I love mine, they were helicopter parents.)

Running and Fitness
A woman with terminal cancer runs her last marathon. How scary to just know a race will be your last – and it could kill you in the process. Such a brave, brave undertaking.

I tweeted this link yesterday, but Angela from Cowgirl Runs has an awesome and informative post on Nutrition and Running. I am obviously eating way too much dairy.

I’m tempted to start training with a heart-rate monitor because I know I don’t push myself hard enough.

Food
Very into what wines sommeliers drink at home.

All about the LA darling artisanal chocolate, Compartes Chocolate. If you’re looking for a stocking stuffer for me, go this route.

I think I’m going to make this Cheesy Kabocha Squash Breakfast Burrito for a lunch or dinner burrito… yum!

My girl Davida recreated one of my favorite meals from my trip to visit her in Toronto with The Ultimate Buddha Bowl.

Oh hello, infographic of what cheese to put on your cheese plate.

Happy Fri-yay, ya’ll. I used to wonder what it would be like to have a Saturday that didn’t involve having a long run and now I unfortunately have a Saturday that doesn’t involve a long run and I’m not into it. Long story short, I decided to try and run 12 miles on my Achilles last week, overcompensated on my quad, strained that and now I’m out for the count. I’m 12 weeks out from the LA Marathon so I called the physical therapist in tears on Tuesday and now I’m in a relationship with ice packs and my foam roller. COOL. If anyone asks, we didn’t meet on Tinder and instead met at a running group. Aren’t. I. Hilarious? My body is basically falling apart and I’m 26.

I’m headed out to SoulCycle since it’s the only form of exercise I like that doesn’t currently kill my quad/Achilles so enjoy the best links I found this week.

Travel
24 Hours in Seattle, Washington. I’m having such issues committing to things, even weekend trips. I need to book a flight to Seattle and just do it.

Lots of us are traveling this season and staying with friends and family. Be a gracious overnight guest so you’re asked back!

Need. To. Go. Glamping. Especially at a place that looks like it’s straight out of a Wes Anderson film.

Lifestyle
Have you started your Christmas/Hanukkah/whatever holiday you celebrate this time of year list yet? Add a few of the best cookbooks of 2015 of the year to your list.

By now, we all know social media is a curated look at the best of the best of someone’s life. What’s actually going on when those photos aren’t so cropped?

This post by Aziz Ansari on parents went pretty viral this week. Your parents were people just like us at one time, they’re just doing the best they can. They just want to spend time with us. And if I ever had someone who was 1/2 me, I’d probably want to hang out with them too.

What do your exes say about you? (Really though, what do say about my exes?) Notice how I said exes. Such a reformed serial dater over here.

Running and Fitness
Eight signs you’re addicted to SoulCycle. My fitness budget is out of control. #noononMonday

Uh, so I can’t run right now… hopefully working out like a Victoria’s Secret Angel will help keep me in shape?

Food
What you should know about going gluten-free. Fun fact – most gluten-free foods are packed with preservatives. Just stick to real, whole foods. If you think that gluten-free bagel is any healthier you’re wrong.

Why have I never thought of stuffing baked apples as a dessert? Sign me up for any of these, please.

These tostadas made from pitas are going to be my dinner next week for sure.

This is once again coming to you late. Remember when I did stuff like write posts the morning before they were supposed to go up? Me either.

This week was jam packed (an event with Brit + Co you’ll see a recap of next week, drinks with a friend from home, dinner for another friend’s birthday, SoulCycle galore) and this weekend is me trying the old leg out on double-digits again, more Soul, a trip to Scribe (hello pickup weekend!) and like maybe fitting in being a real person in there somewhere.

Okay, I need to be out the door for an appointment like right now so enjoy the best links I found this week.

Travel
Loving these ideas of vacations to go on with your group of friends. I’m very into the idea of a surf trip to Morocco… who’s in?

How to save money when you travel abroad. I definitely agree with the Airbnb route and with buying souvenirs for your friends and family that involve food.

Lifestyle
Who doesn’t love following The Fat Jewish? He did an a-maz-ing interview on The Coveteur and it’s definitely worth a read.

Cabin goals. Need I say more?

Remember when I said I was going to be more confident this year? Still a work on progress and these tips to be more confident are good reminders.

Running and Fitness
Spin class in France is just as you expect it to be – not sweaty, not intense and super laid back. Guess Soul won’t be opening there anytime soon?

I love seeing what ultra and elite athletes eat (and people in general, because it reminds me I’m the only psychopath who eats 2 cups of yogurt a day).

Should you stop drinking during marathon training? The glass of wine I had at dinner last night and the cocktail the night before tell you my thoughts on it… but I never drink the few days leading up to a race. Minus that one time. And that other time.

Food
If anyone wants to send me this chocolate vegan salami, please feel free.

Healthy hacks to beat sugar cravings. I need all of these and then some. I am a non-refined sugar #sugarmonster.

Is it ever not banana bread season? Making this Paleo Chocolate Chip Banana Bread from The Iron You this weekend for sure.

Ways to start and end your day with peanut butter. Because if you’re me, you eat like at least 1/4 cup nut butter throughout the day. Literally 1/5-1/4th of my daily calories come from nut butter. It’s maybe an issue.

I have a confession – I’m not into Halloween. I have a really hard time thinking of something both culturally relevant + witty + sexy. Because honestly, I think I’m attractive and I wear skimpy clothes because I’m petite and flat-chested and athletically built and live in California and you can get away with short shorts and flowy tanks that show your bralette and all of that when those things are all things but I’m bad at being like, “okay I’m going to be a sexy cop” or whatever. I cannot be my authentic self when I’m trying to be a sexy sushi roll or something.

Okay, but because it’s Halloween and I am lamenting on being unable to be a sexy bumblebee, I thought I would share a little gem from college with you. Back when I was a size 8 but for whatever reason would go out dressed like this (but look at that tan!). I was a Sexy ABC Officer (Alcohol Board of Control) with my roommates. The real ABC wouldn’t take photos with us… basically McKayla Maroney status non-amused at our antics.

halloween senior year

Okay, now after that trip down memory lane and a great time laughing at how clever I am thinking of Sexy Julia Child Halloween costumes, here are the best links of the week.

Travel
I really need to get my life together and plan a little getaway for Thanksgiving (or just really commit to Friensgiving) and this list of affordable California getaways is a great starting point. (I’ve already knocked Monterey/Carmel and Big Sur off the list, though.

A list of places you should visit in the winter because you can find great airfare deals. Basically all of these places are places I want to visit, since you know my love for Central/South America.

Airport breakfasts are literally the worst. I’ve had a total meltdown in the Detroit airport because they didn’t have plain Greek yogurt. Flight attendants share their healthy airport breakfast tips.

Lifestyle
For whatever reason, I’m mad into this Rihanna interview.

You know I love a good “what does your favorite [fill-in-the-blank] say about you”. I don’t see Peanut M&Ms on ‘What Your Favorite Halloween Candy Says About You”, but I can maybe get behind what it says about Reese’s cups.

I finally bought a bench for my kitchen table so I can have more than one other person over for dinner (don’t you feel like I was talking about that damn bench for the past year?) so now I’m going to use these tips for hosting in a small space.

Emily Shuman of Cupcakes and Cashmere is basically the authority on all things lifestyle. I take her beauty comments to heart.

Running and Fitness
Stretches for runners. All of the yeses. This is why I get injured – I don’t focus on this enough.

The Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates to the US gave John Kerry SoulCycle classes!!! Yes, that many exclamation points were necessary. It’s because Kerry had a bike accident with a curb last spring and the ambassador told him in SoulCycle there aren’t any curbs. Okay, fan girl moment over because I unapologetically love John Kerry because he’s so badass.

Food
Why does LA get everything great Portland has? Why doesn’t SF ever get any love? There’s a Blue Star in LA now (you can find me there after the LA Marathon… followed by Salt & Straw) and this interview with the owners about the brioche donuts is great.

So you’re pairing your Halloween candy with wine, right? If not, you should try it this year.

The Kitchn shares 10 cooking tips that changed everything.

I’m a total failure of baking with yeast. I had my brief stint dating a brewer who was all about making pizza crusts with yeast but I’m still not convinced I was ever successful. Goals for 2016? Learn how to bake with yeast.

The psychology behind restaurant menus. None of it surprising, but it makes you see trends.
