How to Wear a Shift Dress

how to wear a shift dress | almost getting it together

These photos are a month old. I spent the Saturday before Father’s Day Weekend with my dad since I was in Portland over Father’s Day (sorry, Dad). Every year he always wants to go to the Pittsburgh Arts Fest. Last year we actually went to the Arts Fest on Father’s Day after brunch at Meat and Potatoes. Fun fact: a Bloody Mary really takes the edge off of my anxiety.

Needless to say, Pittsburgh Arts Fest STRESSES ME OUT. There are too many people, people have tattoos of Abraham Lincoln on their shins and there are a lot of women wearing things that they shouldn’t be for their body type. This is potentially why I look so uncomfortable in these photos.

One day I will be a less awkward blogger when it comes to fashion. And everything.

I’m so attracted to a shift dress even if it isn’t ideal for my body type (short, athletically-slim – yes, I just made up athletically-slim to describe my body type). They’re basically ideal for girls who are models (5’8” and taller, super skinny) but I’m trying to incorporate more prints in my closet and this fit the bill.

Please note how stressed I am to be in public.

I had to wear this dress twice to be really sold on it, which is how most things that aren’t colored chino shorts, dark super skinny jeans and neutral-colored over-sized tops (I know my style, what can I say?) are for me. I have to get some compliments on whatever I’m wearing to know it truly deserves to take up closet space.

I love the print as I said, but I also love the back detail of this dress. I’m a sucker for cut-out backs, awful tan lines and all. I’ve worn it twice, once with my hair down and once up (post-12 mile run this day, whoops) and think that something with the back detail like this definitely needs to be shown off.

I love a good back cut-out.

Super cute dress girl! Looks gorgeous on you! And that back is awesome :) I’ve yet to go to the arts festival in the 8 years I’ve lived in the burgh haha. I always say I’m going, and then it’s on a weekend/week where I already have stuff going on. Hopefully next year! And I have two tattoos…one on the back of my neck and one on the inside of my left wrist in white

It looks so cute on you! Screw being 5’8 ;-) I have four tattoos right now – one behind my ear, one on my hip, one on my ribs, and one on my lower leg. Ask me again in a year or two and I’m sure the number will have gone up :-p I love them!

I’ve always kind of wanted one but I’m so scared of the pain/commitment of one haha!

Is this where I admit that I have a tattoo now.
I need to go shopping, your fashion posts are giving me poor-girl anxiety. Maybe I should drink a bloody mary. No wait I don’t like those. Where’s the wine?

Cut-outs are my FAVORITE and I think you totally rock this! Shift dresses usually don’t look too great on me because I’m reasonably busty and they just seem to fall and seem kinda boxy on me.

I LOVE IT and I love that you have been doing fashion posts :) I HATE when we take pictures in public and people are staring. Hate. it. so. much. So usually we go one block away from my apartment on a dead-end street. HA. One day maybe I’ll be brave and venture out into the city parts.

We might have to go do a little joint fashion shoot… then we can be ridiculous and people can just accept we are bloggers!

The back of this dress is so cuuuute! And hey, you’re not awkward in those photos at all. I think everyone thinks they look awk in their own fashion post photos (I know I do), unless your Gisele or The Blonde Salad or something… but hey, us athletically-slim girls gotta stay up on our fashion too. ;)

I kept going back and forth with fashion posts… but people like them so I might as well keep it up! And I loveeee Blonde Salad, she’s one of my faves!

You know I don’t have a tattoo! I can tell you must be feeling awkward because based on my weekend photo shoot of you, when you’re not stressed you’re a total natural. Abraham Licoln tattoos would give me anxiety too. I think you need to move out west…oh wait.

Can I just say I love how your blog is so random…one day a recipe, one day a travel recap, one day well…this.

Can I wear a shift dress? Or your kimono dress?

Haha maybe I should get my blog content calendar together… and yes, you can wear both a shift dress and a kimono dress. I think you’d look fab.
