How to Style Shortalls

how to style shortfalls | almost getting it together

Remember when you were a little kid and your parents put you in OshKosh B’Gosh purple shortalls? (Fun fact: Did you know OshKosh B’Gosh has been making kids clothes since 1895?!) Just me? Okay, well then…

Cassie, circa 1991 in purple shortalls. Pushing fashion boundaries since the beginning.

Do you ever feel like you need to buy something to go to a place, i.e. you’re going to France so you should probably buy skinny white jeans and lots of striped tops or you’re going to Austin so you should buy cowboy boots? This is how I ended up with a pair of shortalls in my closet.

I don’t know what exactly it is about Nicaragua that screamed, “You should definitely wear shortalls” but I ended up with a pair in a shopping bag a week or so before I left.

Shortalls NOT in Nicaragua.

It takes me 20 photos to not stand in 4th position from dancing ballet for 10+ years.

I’m also all about white. And neutrals in general. I have this silky Brandy Melville tank I literally always I forget I have but love when I wear it. I decided to pull it out of the old tank top drawer to take to Cincinnati.

Pittsburgh or Cincinnati?

Doesn’t Cincinnati look just like Pittsburgh? Isn’t it weird? Also, this is what I look like after a 12 mile run in the heat and not washing my hair because the humidity made it totally not worth it. Also, I had a blowout scheduled in two days. Aren’t I the worst? But hey, my hair is INSANELY healthy.

Anyway, so what should your wear with shortalls? I love crop tops, simple neutral colored tanks, bralettes and bandeaus, and swim tops. I love adding a pop of color with shoes.

Shoes for a POC (pop-of-color).

Thanks to my cousin Jaimie for being the photographer and for putting up with me always. Also Angela for being the moral support behind this frenzied photo shoot. Love you both so, so much.

you can rock the shortalls. I wore them too much as a kid, plus I’m just too preppy for it!

I tried a pair on from Target a few weeks ago… talk about tragic. You look so cute!! And yes, every time I go somewhere that isn’t Pittsburgh I feel like I need a new clothing item.

Ya know… I honestly don’t think I’ve ever owned a pair of shortalls — not even as a kid. I have a feeling it wouldn’t be a good look for me, but you look super cute!

ALL OF THE FASHION POSTS PLEASE!!!! You won’t catch me dead in shortalls (or having a massive cameltoe while sporting them on IG…not you, don’t worry ;)) but I still love your fashion posts because they make me feel like I am fashionable by association. This post also makes me miss you cause I can imagine how frenzied you probably were with Ang trying to calm you down. Come back :(

Hey. Just stumbled upon your blog and am a fan of it. You look really good in those AE shortalls and should make more blogposts with them.

Quick question: I recently acquired a light wash (blue) pair of ’90s knee-length shortalls (they are a baggier fitting mens’ pair, compared to the one you have in your post). What would you recommend a guy to wear them with? The irony is that I never had a pair when I was raised in the ’90s – which is when overalls were in style.

Hi Nick! I would say to go with a textured t-shirt (i.e. stripes) or a graphic t-shirt – going with a solid color would look too farmer-y.
